How is it that there is only one teacher on the SAUSD School Board?

Guess which one is a teacher?

Most school districts feature at least a few teachers – usually retired educators. But there is only one teacher on the SAUSD School Board – college professor Rigoberto Rodriguez. The other SAUSD Board Members include Alfonso Alvarez, a school social worker; Valerie Amezcua, a retired probation officer; John Palacio, a political consultant; and Ceci Iglesias, a businesswoman.

The current crop of SAUSD School Board candidates includes one teacher – Art Pedroza. The other candidates include Angie Cano, an economist and businesswoman; John Palacio, Valerie Amezcua and Cecilia Aguinaga, a Realtor. Continue reading

Palacio’s low expectations and soft racism are hurting SAUSD students

I ran into SAUSD Trustee John Palacio a couple of this this week, at an SAUSD School Board forum and at today’s State of the District breakfast, at Godinez High School. Both times Palacio repeated what has become his mantra – the SAUSD is setting records for graduations despite the fact that the district is majority Latino.

I heard SAUSD Superintendent Stefanie Phillips say the same thing today and Palacio’s colleague on the SAUSD School Board, Valerie Amezcua, often spins the same tale. All of them are engaging in what amounts to soft racism. Continue reading

CA State Sen. John Moorlach today released his latest fiscal report, “Financial Soundness Rankings for California’s Public School Districts, Colleges & Universities.”

Some key findings from the new education report:

  • About two-thirds of California’s 944 public school districts run negative balance sheets.

SAUSD students lost more ground in English and math proficiency this year

California students did slightly better in English and math on this year’s California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress state test than they did last year, according to the O.C. Register.

The news is much worse here in Santa Ana. Currently 61.83 % of SAUSD students are not proficient in math at their grade level, according to the CA Dept. of Education. Last year 60.36 % of SAUSD students were not proficient in math at their grade level, according to the CA Dept. of EducationContinue reading

The City of Santa Ana and the Santa Ana Unified School District are both trying to raise our taxes this November. Let’s get together and walk precincts for the local candidates opposed to tax increases and talk to residents about voting no on Measures X and I, this Saturday, at 9 a.m.

This is your chance to help our local anti-tax candidates including Art Pedroza and Angie Cano, who are running for the SAUSD School Board; Ceci Iglesias and Mike Gonzales, who are running for the City Council; George Reis, who is running for the Garden Grove School Board; and Autumn Browne who is running for the 69th Assembly District. Why are SAUSD school bathrooms and kitchens such cochineros?

All of my four kids attended Santa Ana schools, from kindergarten, including three high school grads. Each of them was thoroughly disgusted by the condition of the bathrooms at Santa Ana schools.

Common complaints about SAUSD school bathrooms include: Continue reading
